Tackle & Tactics vary depending on the species you want to target, my favoured set-up for shore fishing was my Reelsport Response and a Diawa Saltist 30 reel  loaded with 30lb and 40lb mono which was ideally suited for fishing the heavier ground for cod, just about any of todays beachcasters coupled with an Abu 7000 size reel or a penn 525 will do the job. This sort of set-up will tackle the majority of the fishing you are likely to encounter, distance casting is not necessary because most of the fish are caught between 30 and 100 yards from the shore.
There is no need for complicated rigs: for cod the best all round rig is a simple pulley rig kitted out with an impact shield and strong 4/0 to 6/0 hooks. Use two hook flappers with 1/0 hooks for the haddocks and big dabs, make sure you use strong hooks (NOT fine wire) as you never know what your likely to catch.
If you want some fun fishing then bring a spinning rod or uptider coupled up with a decent fixed spool reel and an assortment of artificial lures as Lure fishing works very well  taking both cod and coalfish into double figures
